frequently asked

questions

Is it paid?
yes, all writer/performers will be paid for their pieces/appearances.

Do I need to be a professional writer/actor?
short answer: no. we aim to empower emerging and professional artists. a great story is a great story. while we’ve had published journalists, playwrights, seasoned actors and novelists in our show before, if you submit a killer piece, we
can’t wait to have you.

Does it need to be a totally true story?
historically, we've leaned towards selecting true stories. you’re welcome to submit stories anywhere on the spectrum of
fiction to non-fiction though, and we will consider them all.

Do I have to perform my own piece?
short answer: yes. this is part of what makes our show special. if there are extenuating circumstances related to ability status or health, please let us know in the “ANYTHING ELSE?” section of the submission, and we’ll be in touch to discuss further.

Can I submit a piece that’s been performed/published elsewhere?
you can indeed.

Any tips on submitting?

  1. we love scene-based stories that embrace specificity and demonstrate how you, the protagonist, were changed

  2. we look for all kinds of tones/emotions in our show (sorrow and pain to humor, joy and reclamation). It’s OK to tell us a story about love gone right, too.

  3. use a format that best fits your story and voice: we’ve had spoken word poets, standup comics, novelists, and songwriters..

  4. you don’t need to have the most dramatic, one-in-a-million story to make our lineup. we love mundane moments that are explored with care, too.

  5. if you have other work that you’d like for us to take a look at while considering your submission, please link to it in the “ANYTHING ELSE?” section of the submission form.
